Why Financing Pathways Are Personal

This week, I was grateful to join a powerful conversation on Financing Pathways for Youth-Led Climate Solutions, powered by Youth4Climate through the UNDP Rome Centre.

Thank you to the organizers, fellow speakers, and the full team for creating a space that felt rare, thoughtful, practical, and honest. And to every participant who showed up with curiosity and urgency: you’re the reason the future still feels bright.

I shared perspectives from both the founder and investor side, what investment readiness actually looks like in practice, how accelerators and ecosystems can become real leverage (or wasted motion), and what happens after due diligence when capital meets reality. Because for youth-led climate builders, the real challenge isn’t just getting to “yes.” It’s getting the kind of patient, structured, de-risked financing that can survive the long arc from pilot to scale.

For me, this isn’t abstract. When you’ve lived scarcity, you understand how systems decide who gets time, tools, and second chances. Climate innovation is a systems problem, and financing is one of the most important systems we can redesign.

Time: The Ultimate Equilibrium in a 4-Dimensional Prison

After the Nile, I learned something before I had language to name it: time is the closest thing to a true democracy in a world built on brutal hierarchies.

The warlord who burned my village and the infant born fleeing it, both receive 24 hours in a day. The billionaire in a penthouse and the refugee in a tent city of a hundred thousand souls, both age at one second per second. You can hoard money. You can concentrate power. You can gatekeep opportunity. But you cannot buy more time. You cannot steal it from others. You cannot pause it while you catch your breath.

Time is the cosmic equalizer, the one constant in our four-dimensional existence that treats the powerful and powerless with the same indifference.

We live inside a prison of linearity: past, present, future. We move forward on rails we cannot see but always feel. We cannot return to yesterday. We cannot skip ahead to next year. We cannot freeze this moment, no matter how precious or painful. The arrow of time passes through all of us, and we bleed seconds into an ocean we will never swim again.

That is the sacredness of time. Human systems can be corrupted, money hoarded, power captured, capital withheld, education denied. Time resists all of it. The refugee child and the president’s daughter still wake to the same 86,400 seconds.

In the six years I spent in refugee camps, Kakuma’s dust storms that turned day into perpetual twilight, Uganda’s makeshift compounds where families lived inside structures of sticks and prayer—I watched time’s democracy unfold with cruel precision.

Aid workers came and went, their two-week rotations a brief visit to our permanent displacement. They returned to lives that waited for them, as if paused like a video on a screen. But for us, time kept moving. Children grew taller in the gaps between meals. Elders grew weaker in the spaces between medical shipments. Time aged us without regard for whether we had homes to return to.

And yet, and this is crucial—time also healed us at the same rate it wounded us.

Every day in that camp was another day survived. Another day my body grew stronger despite malnutrition. Another day my mind absorbed language, in between Nuer, Arabic, eventually English, building neural pathways that would later become escape routes. Time was both prison and training ground.

Sometimes I think about time in higher dimensions—the fifth, sixth, seventh—dimensions physics suggests but our senses can’t perceive. I don’t mean this as a claim, but as a way of describing what it feels like to live in superposition: as if all moments exist at once, and consciousness is simply the thin slice we’re allowed to hold.

If that’s true, then perhaps I am simultaneously:

• the infant being born on the Nile,

• the six-year-old arriving in Dallas speaking no English,

• the teenager whose mother died on a snowy Iowa road,

• the college dropout launching a clothing brand at concerts,

• the nonprofit founder surveying 240 people about youth workforce gaps,

• the talent manager borrowing a phone to message Rihanna,

• the Managing Director deploying $1.5 million to overlooked founders,

• the speaker at the UN calling blended finance a moral imperative,

• the old man I will become, looking back at this very moment of writing.

And perhaps those versions of me are reaching backward and forward through time, informing each other, creating a kind of temporal resonance that we interpret as intuition, when it is really echo.

This is why I act with urgency. This is why I don’t wait for permission. Because I understand time as the only non-renewable resource in a universe of recycled matter. Every atom in your body was once a star. But these seconds, these specific moments, once spent, collapse into history. Irretrievable.

Welcome to the first edition of what I hope will be many notes on startups, venture capital, and worldviews. You’re receiving this newsletter because we’ve crossed paths in Silicon Valley, the Midwest, New York, D.C., East Africa, and Europe.

Particularly, through the many lives I’ve lived as a venture capitalist at gener8tor & Draper University, a serial founder, nonprofit leader running Conscious Youth Solutions, a public speaker, World Economic Forum community member, and an exemplified community leader across many parts of the world.

Along with advocating for refugees at global events like the UN General Assembly & the IMF/World Bank Annual Meeting. This newsletter is where those versions of me can exist at once, because that’s the only way I’ve ever known to exist.

I’d be remiss not to start with an introduction to who I am and how I arrived at this exact moment, writing this. You may be wondering about the photo below of the Great Nile Migration, the largest land-mammal migration on Earth. That’s where my birth story begins: as what I call a “quantum refugee,” born in South Sudan, the world’s youngest country.

The Nile doesn’t ask permission. It flows with the indifference of eternity, carrying prayers and corpses with equal dignity. On April 4, 1994, under a sky choked with smoke and the percussion of automatic gunfire, my mother’s water broke as our village burned.

This was not a hospital. This was not even land. This was a wooden raft, splintered and groaning, cutting through dark water while Northern Sudanese soldiers attempted to systematically erase our existence from the earth.

My father, a Presbyterian pastor who had once survived execution by the width of a heartbeat, gripped my mother’s hand as she labored. My siblings huddled in the corners, their small bodies trembling with each distant explosion.

And somewhere between the shore we fled and the shore we couldn’t yet see, in the liminal space where death and life exist simultaneously, I was born on the Nile River, floating down a makeshift raft. They named me Moses, not as a metaphor, but as testimony to the improbable odds.

In quantum mechanics, there’s a principle called superposition, the idea that particles exist in all possible states simultaneously until observed, until measured, until the universe decides which reality will collapse into being. Schrödinger’s cat is both alive and dead until you open the box.

I was both alive and dead on that river. My mother was both a mother and a refugee. That raft was both a cradle and a coffin. And in that moment of ultimate uncertainty, the wave function collapsed. I took my first breath.

The universe chose life, even though there was less than a 1% chance of survival, a lottery ticket pulled from an urn of suffering, filled with millions of losing numbers.

United Nations General Assembly 79th Session

But the founder is only one version of me. The quantum refugee is also a global citizen, a policy voice, and a witness, and that version of me shows up not only in board rooms, but in the halls of the United Nations, carrying the same questions about survival, dignity, and systems.

In 2024, I had the opportunity to attend UNGA 79, and I was reminded of my own journey. Growing up as a refugee, I lived the reality of scarcity, families forced to choose between food, health, and education, with no safety net to fall back on. These aren’t abstract policy debates; they’re lived experiences for millions still in camps today.

Now, through the lens of finance and investment, I see how global dynamics compound those same inequities:

• Geopolitical tensions and tariff wars disrupt fragile economies.

• Inflation and uncertainty deepen cycles of scarcity.

• The race for AI is reshaping industries—but risks widening the digital divide for those left outside.

In developed countries, social safety nets cushion shocks. In much of the Global South, the absence of these systems forces short-term survival decisions that trap communities in poverty.

That’s why the Pact for the Future, advanced during UNGA 79 week cannot remain aspirational. Implementation and financing are everything. Governments alone can’t close the SDG gap, and private capital won’t move without the right incentives.

The answer lies in blended finance and public-private partnerships that de-risk investments and unlock trillions for underserved and too-often ignored communities.

For me, this is more than policy, it’s personal. I’ve experienced what it means to be on the margins of global systems, and I’ve seen the transformative power of capital when deployed with equity and vision. I have an unwavering conviction that democratizing access to capital and resources for underserved communities is not just a tool, it’s a moral imperative to ensure no one is left behind.

The boy born on the river, the founder in the pitch room, and the advocate in the assembly hall aren’t three different people. They’re the same wave function, still collapsing, still choosing life.
